Ice wine…does anyone know where I can buy it?

August 13th, 2008

I tasted ice wine, which is a chilled, fruity, white wine, at a wine bar in NYC 2 months ago. I really liked it, but did not buy it then because I didn't want to carry it around all day, and then on the plane.

Where can I get that?

Inniskillen is the most popular and is widely available at most decent wine shops. Bonny Doon makes a less expensive, popular one (vin glacier) that is widely distributed. If you can't find those, consider any of the higher-end semillon-based desert wines such as Noble One, Kracher, and Sauternes. They aren't technically ice wines, but are very similar, though sweeter and more flavorful.

It's widely available. Any good-sized liquor store should carry it. Also try upscale supermarkets like Bristol Farms and Whole Foods.

I saw it on the weekend at a winery in Intercourse, PA. like $40 a bottle or something. Its not an actual winery just a wine shop i guess. Just down the road from the Amish Experience near Bird-In-Hand.
    Hope that helps. :)

eis wine, or ice wine, is a german thing (i recently found this out, we've moved to germany). it's made after the first frost, so i would guess that anywhere that gets a frost can make it… my suggestion is if you have one - try beverages & more… they have all kinds of wine…

Ice wines have become a fad (an expensive fad!), especially ice wines made in Canada. Some of those, especially from the Niagara appellation in Ontario, should be available at almost any half-decent American wine retailer (but not supermarkets because of exposure to theft - almost all ice wines are sold in small 375ml bottles).

Some northern-state American wineries like those in New York and eastern Washington State and elsewhere have
begun to produce ice wines for their cash flow as long as the fad continues, but I have not heard before about Bonny Doon's vin glacier (Bonny Doon's vineyards, many of which were recently sold, are located in a part of California which almost never gets cold enough). And
several hard apple cider producers in Quebec have started to produce ice cider for the same reason.

The really great ice wines, though, almost all come from Germany, with a few from Austria. When I graduated from wine school 40 years ago, at our graduation we were served a thimbleful-sized glass of the 1912 Steinberger Eiswein Trockenbeerenausle. Incredible!

The best Icewines come from the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada.
They all have websites and ship.
If you want something a little less sweet and cheaper look for something called BA.
