Because you probably tried to purchase them on a Sunday. N.C. along with other states have blue laws that state you can not purchase anything on a Sunday except for normal food items.

Beer and wine and all the other things are sold in supermarkets and gas stations. Liquor is sold in the ABC (state run alcohol stores) thanks to old Blue Laws. You also can't buy liquor on Sunday in some places until a certain time.
