Fiori Vidal Ice Wine too expensive?
I love this wine but at $35 a bottle it is too expensive. Anyone know any wines with a simalr taste and smaller price tag?
Look for wines made with muscat grapes in the dessert wine section. The taste is similar and also quite sweet, but the viscosity will be that of regular wine and not syrupy like ice wine. Also look into other brands. There are some makers out there who sell bottles for between 15.00 and 20.00. Tomasello Vidal, for example, goes for 17.99 online and usually if you buy a case most wine dealers will give you 10 to 15% off.
Also if you're lucky, sometimes a dealer will just be trying to get rid of it and give you a good price.
Remember also that ice wine is not meant to be drunk in the same way as regular wines. Though ice wine glasses usually hold 9 ounces or so, traditionally, only the bottom of the bowl of the glass is filled to render a 2 or 3 ounce serving.

Trader Joe's has an Ice Wine from Germany (it's not a Riesling, sorry) for $19.99.

Try a Beaume de Venise ($20-25) — some of these are unbelievable, Domaine de Coyeaux makes a great one. Also, Ceretto Moscato d'Asti is astonishing $17-23. There are a great many quality dessert wines, some American, some foreign. Very good dessert wines can be found from $9 to about $15. While American wineries produce many ice wines at high prices (say $35 to $80), most are low quality. Fiori does make a very good product. Other dessert wines you might consider are Sauternes (and yes, good Sauternes can be found even now for under $25.00). Either of the above wines should easily be rival the ice wine you mention. Also, watch for Gini 'Recioto di Soave' or other similar "Recioto di Soaves" — warning, Soave in general is a dry white wine unless it is labelled "Recioto".
