Inniskillin Ice Wine (White)?

August 16th, 2008

I want to buy Inniskillin Ice Wine (White) as a gift to my friend in a gift box. We will be having dinner and how can I keep the wine in excellent condition while travelling (carrying around)? Does the temperature as well as the movement/vibrations affect the wine? My country is 25 to 30 degree celsius all year round.

Having had a great deal of experience with Canadian Icewines (I represent them in the US) I would recommend NOT chilling the Inniskillin Icewine prior to traveling to your destination (whether it is five minutes or five hours) as the humidity / dampness from the refrigerator or ice pack can damage the gift box that seems important to you. Rather, have the recipient chill the wine after arrival.

As previously stated, routine transit of the wine will not harm it — only excessive heat, sunlight and violent shaking or vibrations.

Cheers!

Fiori Vidal Ice Wine too expensive?

August 16th, 2008

I love this wine but at $35 a bottle it is too expensive. Anyone know any wines with a simalr taste and smaller price tag?

Look for wines made with muscat grapes in the dessert wine section. The taste is similar and also quite sweet, but the viscosity will be that of regular wine and not syrupy like ice wine. Also look into other brands. There are some makers out there who sell bottles for between 15.00 and 20.00. Tomasello Vidal, for example, goes for 17.99 online and usually if you buy a case most wine dealers will give you 10 to 15% off.

Also if you're lucky, sometimes a dealer will just be trying to get rid of it and give you a good price.

Remember also that ice wine is not meant to be drunk in the same way as regular wines. Though ice wine glasses usually hold 9 ounces or so, traditionally, only the bottom of the bowl of the glass is filled to render a 2 or 3 ounce serving.

What's the best temperature for storing and serving ice wine?

August 16th, 2008

Please give 2 temperatures (one for storing, one for serving). Celsius would be an added bonus! Also, I'm not interested in the makings of ice wine (I already know that!)

45º and 50º to store
41º-46º F for serving
Icewine with a cork closure should be stored on its side to prevent the cork from drying out. icine with a synthetic closure does not have to be stored on its side, but wine racks are just so handy. Wine likes dark, consistently cool storage areas. Exposure to intense light and heat can ruin a wine.

Can I carry alcohol on a plane that lands in the US?

August 13th, 2008

I am flying from Canada to Germany via Philadelphia. I would like to buy a bottle of ice cider and a bottle of ice wine for my friends. Is that legal? Can I put them in my suitcase if it's not a carry-on?

I called Air Canada but they are overloaded with calls because of weather conditions and ask me to call later…

No you cannot carry any liquids more that 3 oz onto a plane, especially if it is flying into the US. You will however be able to put it in your suitcase.

Riesling Ice wines, opinions please?

August 13th, 2008

Riesling Icewines are probably tied for my favourite white Icewine (with the ephemeral goodness of Gewurztraminer). At their best (notably 'Royal de Maria' and 'Stratus') they are luscious, balanced, and have gorgeous lime and petrol notes.

The really beautiful thing about Riesling Icewines though, isn't in comparing them to other Icewines that you might drink right away. If you can, stick them in a cellar for a decade; between the sugar content and the Riesling's natural qualities, they can really handle long-term aging. You do need proper cellar conditions though.

I'd say drinking a quality Riesling Icewine anytime before five years is too soon - after that the petrol and spice really come out. I was fortunate enough once to try a 12 year old Riesling Icewine… wow, just wow. The balance, the complexity, the subtleties, just amazing.

Enjoy!

How long can a bottle of "Ice wine" keep in refrigerator? Is a bottle of year 1999 ice wine still good?

August 13th, 2008

Ice wine is named so because the grapes aren't picked until after the first frost. Therefore the wine will keep as long as any other wine.

Ice wine…does anyone know where I can buy it?

August 13th, 2008

I tasted ice wine, which is a chilled, fruity, white wine, at a wine bar in NYC 2 months ago. I really liked it, but did not buy it then because I didn't want to carry it around all day, and then on the plane.

Where can I get that?

Inniskillen is the most popular and is widely available at most decent wine shops. Bonny Doon makes a less expensive, popular one (vin glacier) that is widely distributed. If you can't find those, consider any of the higher-end semillon-based desert wines such as Noble One, Kracher, and Sauternes. They aren't technically ice wines, but are very similar, though sweeter and more flavorful.
